Site preparation for planting grass seeds

To prepare site we can apply both lime and a complete lawn fertilizer. Lime neutralizes a soil’s pH level. Most grasses need a neutral soil pH in order to thrive. Apply lime at roughly the rate of two tons per acre.

Apply the fertilizer and lime at the recommended rates and according to directions. Work the fertilizer and lime evenly into the earth and then level the soil.

There are many different methods that can be used for planting lawns. Ideally all grass seeds have the best results when planted into a freshly prepared, tilled, firm, pure soil (no plants or weeds present) seed bed. The key with getting grass seeds to germinate is to have good “seed/soil” contact. By good soil contact that means that soil (not grasses) is in direct contact to the surface of the seeds. Ideally the best seed/soil contact is where the seeds are completely surrounded by soil.

Grass seeds can be planted in the spring and fall with good results. If you want to plant grass in the spring, you should do so as soon as it is possible. Roots need to strong before the weather gets too hot. For a fall planting of grass seed, the rules are the same – grass seeds need time to fully germinate before freezing temperatures arrive in your region. Don’t expect germination to be as good as you think. Seeds require a certain amount of growing time at proper temperatures and conditions to germinate.
